Women In Workforce In Saudi Arabia. Unique Challenges And Beating Stereo Types
The mass media represents the Saudi woman as a dark shadow forced to follow her husband; a woman who is there to produce more and more children and who is altogether deprived of the chance to contribute to the society.
Women is Saudi Arabia face many challenges from different quarters. These challenges are caused by both internal and external factors. The outside challenge is the media portrayal of Saudi women. The mass media (read western media) portrays Saudi Women as a gullible, credulous lot, following the diktats of their husbands. They are also represented as women for whom there is no place in any workforce.
However, Saudi women also find a tough challenge within the society. Opinions of a Saudi Woman are neglected most of the times. Traditionally women were more or less confined to the chores of the house and did not particularly venture into professional activities outside. However, in recent years, the Saudi woman rose to the occasion, breaking the stereotypes and demanding her right to contribute to the society and a gracious acceptance in workforce.
More and more Saudi women are now joining the workforce. The women population of Saudi Arabia is nine million out which a considerable number find their place in various business sectors. About 40% of the country�s wealth is in their hands; therefore, they are rich and need no assistance from their male partners. Today, around 15,000 commercial businesses are run by Saudi women. Some even work in the state run oil company.
Like any other country, Saudi women are graduating from different universities of the Kingdom. About 58 percent of Saudi university students are females. They select the careers of their own choice and work quite efficiently in their respective departments.
The most common jobs taken by Saudi women are in medicine, education, economics and banking sectors. They have done wonders in these fields. To give an example, Lulua Asaad is a Saudi Citizen based in Austria who has worked at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Lulua is just one example of the thousands of proud women in the country who are venturing into what was once a men only aspect of life and are not only breaking ground by foraying into the professional world but also by working miracles therein.
There are many avenues for Saudi women in the workforce. There are places in the commercial market best suited for women, as far as Saudi Arabia is concerned. For example, in 2007, Labor Minister Ghazi al-Ghusaibi issued an order to recruit women and only women to work in lingerie shops. This judgement is in line with the type of work culture in Saudi Arabia.
Over the past decade, there is a dramatic change in the women participation in workforce in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi woman has realized the challenge to contribute to her society and is leaving no stone unturned in giving her 100%.
